CASSETTE TAPES FORGIVENESS

‘Forgiveness’ from San Francisco duo Cassette Tapes is a dose of confessional honesty that doesn’t necessary show the central character in the best light. The opening line doesn’t disguise this real-life situation of betrayal and heartbreak - “you thought it was love, / until I went behind your back, / now you won’t pick up the phone, / but do I even want you back?” In this introduction, the glassy falsetto of vocalist Jackson Stokes soulfully croons over simmering synth keys and a simple ticking beat. It hooks the listener in before the track bursts into a catchy chorus, complete with organic drum patterns and brass section put into the context of Parker Livingston’s thoughtful production. ‘Forgiveness’ doesn’t reach a resolution, instead we circle around the conscience-clearing admission, “I don’t want you back, but I’m asking for forgiveness” in all its soulful persuasion. Cassette Tapes don’t go in for vague lyrics or complicated-for-the-sake-of-it production, instead the listener can instantly understand the song’s meaning, making way for enjoyment whether you’re blasting up those horns loud or allowing the soul to sink into the background. Keep an eye out for Cassette Tapes’ new EP, Side A, out this September. - Hannah Thacker
